ASL

At Mearns Academy, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Our ASL Department provides guidance and resources to help our young people achieve their full potential. The team is committed to supporting and working with young people, families, other agencies and colleagues to provide tailored support, effective strategies, assistance and adaptations that enhances learning experiences and promotes confidence, independence and success. We help with strategies and interventions and personalised learning plans.

Our department supports a wide range of needs and we strive to create a nurturing environment where all learners feel valued, included and empowered to achieve their goals.

About Us

ASL is a fun, supportive and diverse faculty. We offer emotional as well as learning support and a safe space for our young people.

We have ASL teachers and Pupil Support Assistants who support learners both in class and out of class.

We have three classrooms, a sensory room, a Lifeskills area and an outdoor classroom. Young people with more complex needs access the ASL department for a higher level of targeted, enhanced provision.

We offer some alternative qualifications, such as Personal Development Awards, and flexible learning opportunities in ASL and we tailor teaching to the age and stage of the pupil. Most importantly, our role is to try to remove any potential barriers and help learners to help themselves.

The ASL Department is always open at interval and lunchtime for any pupil who would like a supervised, safe space to go.
