Performing
· Battle of the Bands
Learners will work together to form bands, assigning roles such as vocalist and/or instrumentalist. They will practice their live performance skills, focusing on elements such as timing, pitch, dynamics, and stage presence. Rehearsals will provide the opportunity for bands to build cohesion within their groups and develop the confidence needed to perform successfully during the final “Battle of the Bands” event.
Composition
· Battle of the Bands (Song Writing)
Learners will create an original song, including at least one verse and one chorus. They will work collaboratively to brainstorm ideas, develop lyrics, and experiment with melodies, rhythms, and harmonies. This process allows learners to express their creativity while learning about song structure and the collaborative nature of music creation.
Understanding Music
· Battle of the Bands (Popular Music)
The project will focus on developing learners’ knowledge of musical elements and live performance practices. Bands will explore concepts such as rhythm, tempo, dynamics, pitch, and timbre, as well as different musical genres and styles that may influence their bands. They will reflect on their own performances and compositions, identifying areas of strength and aspects they can improve. This reflection encourages critical thinking and a deeper understanding of music, as well as the importance of communication and teamwork in a live music setting.
How Can Help Be Given At Home
Learners are encouraged at all stages, levels and abilities to enjoy performing at home should they have access to any instruments. This will always be supported by class teachers.

Performing
· Performing Assessment (Personalised Programmes of Study)
Learners will have the opportunity to perform music individually, with accuracy and assurance using their chosen instruments. To ensure progression in performing, individual music will be identified that suits the learner’s ability and interests. Learners will continue to develop knowledge in reading notation specific to their instrument(s) including, treble and bass clef notation, tablature and/or chord symbols to aid an individual performance. Learners will also be encouraged to communicate the mood and character of a piece of music, for example through the use of appropriate dynamics, tempo changes and expression marks.
· Classroom Arrangement (World Music)
Through the context of World Music learners will take part in group performance. Playing music with others builds teamwork, confidence, and discipline whilst learning to listen, cooperate, and express themselves. Through this activity learners will encounter specific music related concepts linked to both styles.
Composition
· Indian Classical Composition
Through discussion of relevant music concepts and compositional techniques learners will generate ideas to support the creation of original music through Indian Music. Where possible, learners will be encouraged to use appropriate music notation to capture ideas using ICT.
Understanding Music

Planning for Manufacture: Once their design is complete, pupils will create a step-by-step plan for how they would manufacture their penny box, considering materials, tools, processes, and order of operations.
5 Volt Lamp Design & Make Project
In this unit, pupils will design and manufacture a functional 5-volt lamp, building on the design process skills developed during the Penny Box project. Pupils will work through the same key stages of designing, developing, and planning before moving on to manufacture a working product that incorporates an electronic circuit.
Pupils will have the opportunity to design a lamp that reflects their own creativity and interests, using a combination of materials such as wood, metal, and plastic. They will make use of the workshop tools, machines, and resources available in the department to produce their final outcome.
Throughout this unit, pupils will gain experience in:
Generating and developing design ideas
Designing for both form and function
Planning a manufacturing sequence
Working with a range of materials including wood, metal, and plastic
Constructing and installing a simple 5-volt electronic circuit
Using workshop tools and machines safely and effectively
This project allows pupils to combine practical manufacturing skills with electronics and creative design, resulting in a personalised and fully functional lamp.
How Can Help Be Given At Home
A Google Classroom has been set up for S3 Design & Manufacture classes [code: zdmcmpgh].
On the Classroom, you’ll find dedicated sections for each project, which include:
Design briefs
Exemplar folios and examples of pupil work
Revision resources for the class tests at the end of each unit
Assessment Grids used to assign marks and provide pupils with specific feedback on their strengths and areas for development.
Parents can support their child by encouraging them to review the materials, discuss their design ideas, and prepare for upcoming assessments using the revision resources provided.

Box Assessment Project
This unit provides pupils with an opportunity to complete a practical woodworking assessment in a format similar to the S4 Practical Woodworking and Practical Metalworking assignments. The focus of this task is on independent working and applying previously learned skills with confidence and accuracy. Pupils will manufacture a wooden box while being assessed on their practical abilities throughout the process.
Pupils will be assessed on:
Measuring & Marking Out
Cutting & Shaping
Assembly
Finishing
This assessment allows pupils to demonstrate their level of practical skill and readiness for National Qualification coursework while developing independence and responsibility in the workshop.
Wooden Stool Project
In this extended woodworking project, pupils will manufacture a wooden stool using pine and MDF. The project introduces more complex woodworking joints, including the haunched mortise and tenon joint, and builds upon the practical skills developed throughout S3.
Pupils will use a combination of hand tools and machine tools to produce a strong and well-finished product, focusing on accuracy and quality of workmanship.
Throughout this project, pupils will gain experience in:
Measuring and marking out accurately
Cutting and shaping timber using hand and machine tools
Producing complex woodworking joints
Preparing and applying finishes to pine and MDF
Assembling wooden components safely and effectively
Following workshop health and safety practices
This project helps pupils further develop confidence, precision, and craftsmanship while producing a functional piece of furniture.
How Can Help Be Given At Home
A Google Classroom has been set up for S3 Practical classes [code: f2d25haw].
Although the Wooden Clock Project is completed in school using specialist tools and equipment, there are still ways for parents and carers to support learning at home.
All pupils have access to a Google Classroom, where they will find:
Working drawings for all projects
Revision resources to help prepare for the class test at the end of the unit.
The class test will focus on the skills, tools, joints, and processes involved in the manufacture of the clock. Reviewing these materials at home and discussing the project with your child can help reinforce their understanding and boost their confidence ahead of the assessment.

Practice Box Design & Make Project
Having completed the design phase of their Practice Box prior to the summer break, pupils will now focus on finishing off the manufacturing stage. This involves:
Assembling the pine frame
Finishing and fitting the MDF back panel
Finishing and assembling the acrylic front panel
Once the practical work is complete, pupils will sit a class test assessing their understanding of the tools, materials, and processes used throughout the project.
Penny Box Design & Make Project
In this unit, pupils will develop their own unique design for a functional penny box, working through key stages of the design process.
Initial Ideas: Pupils will generate a range of ideas- gaining marks for creativity, diversity and problem-solving.
Explored Ideas: Pupils will then select and explore one of their ideas, developing and refining the idea towards a suitable design solution.

Wooden Clock Project
Practical skills will be developed further in this extended woodworking task, which introduces more advanced joints and manufacturing techniques.
To prepare for this, pupils will begin with a practice joint exercise, where they will be assessed on their ability to accurately measure, mark out, cut and shape a range of basic wood joints. This work will help pupils to reflect upon areas for improvement and to refine their technique before progressing to the main project.
The main focus of the unit is the manufacture of a wooden clock. Pupils will use a combination of hand tools and machine tools to produce a high-quality final product.
Pupils will be assessed on:
Measuring & Marking Out
Cutting & Shaping
Machining & Finishing
Assembly
Engineer’s Square Project
In this metalwork project, pupils will manufacture a high-quality Engineer’s Square using mild steel and brass. This project introduces precision engineering techniques and challenges pupils to produce a functional measuring tool built to professional standards.
Throughout this project, pupils will gain experience in:
Measuring and marking out accurately on metal
Cutting, shaping, and filing mild steel and brass components
Assembling and finishing metal parts to a high standard
Using hand and machine tools safely and effectively
Applying workshop health and safety practices
