Year Group Learning Information
This section has been developed in partnership with the Mearns Academy Parent Council (MAPC). While our young people experience and understand their learning in class, it was felt that parents and carers would benefit from having clearer information to help support learning at home.
Each Faculty has produced a very short overview outlining:
What pupils are covering each term
How support can be given at home
Key deadlines to be aware of
These are intended as brief snapshots rather than detailed guides. More comprehensive information is always available through course notes and Google Classroom.
We hope you find these overviews useful in supporting conversations at home with your child. Often, when a young person is asked “What did you do at school today?” the answer might simply be “nothing.” Our aim is that these updates will provide prompts to encourage richer discussions about their learning.
Senior Phase Assessment Calendar
To assist pupils / parents with preparation for course assessments, we have developed a draft assessment calendar for the academic year to give pupils an idea of when assessments will be carried out.

Higher Graphic Communication — Assignment
Pupils will now be preparing for and completing the Higher Graphic Communication Assignment. This is a practical design task set by the SQA and forms a significant component of the overall course assessment.
During this unit, pupils will apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course to produce a graphics-based solution to a given design brief. This will involve a combination of sketching techniques and computer-aided design (CAD), allowing pupils to demonstrate their ability to communicate complex design ideas clearly and accurately using graphical methods.
As part of the assignment, pupils will:
Interpret and analyse a design brief
Produce preliminary and developed design sketches
Create detailed supported graphics using CAD
Apply drawing standards, layout, and presentation techniques
Produce a refined final graphic solution
Pupils will work with a high level of independence while completing this coursework under SQA assessment conditions. The assignment allows them to demonstrate creativity, problem-solving, accuracy, and effective use of graphic communication techniques.
This assignment represents an important component of the final Higher Graphic Communication grade.

Higher Design and Manufacture — Design Assignment
Since the beginning of Term 3, pupils have been working on their Higher Design and Manufacture Assignment. This is a major element of the course assessment and allows pupils to demonstrate advanced design skills developed throughout the course.
The assignment requires pupils to respond to a given design brief and work through the complete design process. Pupils research, generate a wide range of ideas, develop and refine concepts, and produce detailed design proposals using appropriate graphic techniques. Practical work is limited to soft modelling and other design-based techniques, which support the development and evaluation of their proposed solution.
As part of the assignment, pupils will:
Analyse and interpret a complex design brief
Carry out research and investigation to inform their designs
Generate and develop creative and practical design solutions
Produce detailed drawings, diagrams, and plans
Create soft models and prototypes to explore ideas
Justify design decisions and evaluate the effectiveness of their proposed solution
Pupils are working independently under SQA assessment conditions, applying creativity, problem-solving, and technical knowledge. This assignment forms a significant portion of the final Higher Design and Manufacture grade and provides an opportunity for pupils to demonstrate design thinking and decision-making skills.

Term 1 & 2 Project – Practice Design assignment
Approx. 40% of the graphic communication course marks come from a Design Assignment that is issued and marked by SQA. The remainder of the course award comes from the final exam.
During term 1 & 2 the class will concentrate on completing previous assignments to reinforce their knowledge and practice with regards to both Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) and Desk top publishing (DTP) techniques.
Pupils will also need to ensure that they stay on top of their revision for the design elements and principles as well as the DTP principles and will be issued with previous exam questions as homework to aid in this.
