Our BGE programme is created to give our pupils the opportunity to enhance their digital skills, participate in the skills of Administration and understand the concepts of running a Business.
In S1, pupils begin their journey in Digital Literacy by learning how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. They explore the importance of online safety, including the appropriate use of social media, and develop the ability to identify reliable sources of information. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about what they read online and explain why some sources are more trustworthy than others.
As they progress, pupils are introduced to Computing Science through the visual programming language Scratch. They build their skills step by step—starting with basic commands and moving on to more advanced concepts like movement, shapes, and variables. This learning experience culminates in the creation of their own interactive game, complete with multiple levels.
To round off the year, pupils take part in a creative and practical Top Trumps project. This hands-on task allows them to apply their IT and admin skills to design and produce a full set of Top Trumps cards, including the box and game rules. The project ends with a fun and rewarding session where pupils get to play the games they’ve created.
S2 Business – Café No.1 and the Food Truck Challenge
In S2, pupils take part in an exciting enterprise project called Café No.1, where they step into the role of business owners. This hands-on experience introduces them to key business skills such as conducting market research, sourcing suppliers, designing a café space, and creating a menu. The project gives pupils a real-world insight into what’s involved in launching and managing a business.
Building on this, pupils are then challenged to expand their business idea into a mobile food truck. This extension allows them to apply everything they’ve learned from the café project, while developing new ideas and strategies to adapt their business on the move.
Throughout the year, pupils also develop essential Administration & IT skills, which are embedded across all activities. These skills not only support their project work but also give them a strong foundation for making informed choices about continuing with Business or Administration & IT in S3.
S3 Business & IT – Exploring Enterprise and Digital Skills
In S3, pupils take part in a combined Business and IT course, designed to give them a broad foundation in both subjects and help them make informed choices for S4. This dynamic course is built around a series of engaging projects and tasks that blend teamwork with individual creativity.
Pupils explore real-world business and digital concepts through exciting themes such as Theme Park planning, Chocolate Bar branding, and other enterprise challenges.
These projects allow pupils to develop key skills in marketing, finance, administration, and digital technology, while gaining a clear understanding of what to expect in National-level Business and Administration & IT courses.
By the end of S3, pupils are well-equipped with the knowledge and experience needed to confidently choose their preferred pathway in S4.
Business Education in the Senior Phase
Building on the foundational knowledge and skills developed in S1–S3, pupils studying Business in S4–S6 continue to deepen their understanding of key areas such as enterprise, finance, marketing, and the economy. Through practical activities, case studies, and real-world applications, pupils are encouraged to think critically, solve problems, and develop entrepreneurial mindsets.
Pupils who opt to study Administration & IT or Business Management will complete mandatory units that focus on practical ICT skills, business decision-making, and organisational effectiveness.
The courses currently offered to Senior Phase pupils are:
NPA Business & IT (Level 5)
National 5 Administration & IT
Higher Business Management
Higher Administration & IT
NPA Business & IT (Level 6)
Foundation Apprenticeship in Business
S6 only – Young Enterprise and NPA Level 6 Events
These courses vary by incorporating both internal and external assessments. These include assignments, case study analysis, and formal examinations that assess pupils’ understanding of business theory, their ability to apply knowledge in context, and their proficiency in using IT tools effectively.
Staff in the Business Education Department employ a variety of teaching strategies to engage learners and provide personalised feedback to support progress. While formative assessment remains a key part of tracking development, there is a greater emphasis on summative assessment to prepare pupils for final qualifications and future pathways in further education or the world of work.
Studying Business and Administration & IT opens the door to a wide range of exciting and rewarding career opportunities. These subjects equip pupils with essential skills in communication, organisation, problem-solving, and digital literacy—skills that are highly valued in today’s job market. Whether pupils are interested in becoming entrepreneurs, working in finance, marketing, human resources, or pursuing roles in office management and IT support, the knowledge and experience gained through these courses provide a strong foundation. Many pupils go on to further study at college or university, while others move directly into apprenticeships or employment in business-related fields. Our curriculum is designed to inspire ambition and prepare pupils for success in the modern workplace.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
Our pupils have the opportunity to bring their entrepreneurial skills to life through exciting real-world experiences such as the Christmas Fair and Young Enterprise activities. These events allow pupils to take ownership of their ideas—from product development and branding to marketing and sales. Working both independently and in teams, they gain valuable experience in planning, budgeting, customer service, and teamwork. The Christmas Fair provides a festive platform for pupils to design, create, and host local crafters and business, while Young Enterprise challenges them to run a small business over a longer period, developing a deeper understanding of how businesses operate in the real world. These experiences not only build confidence and creativity but also prepare pupils for future pathways in business, enterprise, and beyond.
All pupils are welcome to the department to work on their IT skills at any free or lunch times they have.
We offer supported study for senior phase pupils at a day and time to be confirmed.
